DEXA is the only reliable way to measure bone density and diagnose osteoporosis — X-rays cannot detect early bone loss. Use X-ray for fractures and structural assessment. For bone health screening, especially post-menopausal women and seniors, DEXA is the essential test.
X-rays are very insensitive for osteoporosis — they only show bone loss after 30–40% of bone density is already gone. By that point, the condition is advanced. DEXA scan can detect bone loss as low as 1–2%, enabling early intervention.
For screening purposes, DEXA is recommended every 2 years for women over 65 and men over 70. Those on osteoporosis treatment may need annual DEXA scans to monitor treatment response.
